Failure is Success in Disguise
His realization came hazily as his memories of such a tender age were faded by time. What he can remember though, is that he was always striving hard to learn how to bike. His mom and dad bought him a bike too big for his age and so he had difficulty in using the pedals.
Juris practiced his biking skills everyday, sometimes falling because he could not even reach the ground. While his bicycle had a handbrake, he could remember using his feet to stop his bike whenever he feels like it. Finally, his frustration has borne fruit because after weeks of daily practice, he has learned to stroll around the neighborhood with his bike.
Such a simple lesson from a child but every adult can learn so much from it. Our society has placed so much emphasis on success that failure has become a dirty and much-avoided word.
Others rely on positive thinking to keep failure at bay. While it helps, it also lulls a person into believing that nothing can go wrong, thus creating a false sense of security.
Failure may be a bitter pill to swallow but everyone must fail at one time in their lives. However, as Juris' experience has taught us, it is not the fact that you have failed that is important but the manner in which you have accepted and risen from such failure.
A person can either allow himself to be thwarted by failure, or he can use such failure to build up his determination to climb more mountains. What is important is that the experience of failing was not for naught, because the person who failed learned something from the experience.

Effective Leaders Anticipate Problems and Accept Truth
1. Anticipate Problems: Since problems are inevitable, good
leaders anticipate them. Anyone who expects the road to be
easy will continually find himself in trouble. I heard a
story about David Livingstone, the missionary to Africa, that
illustrates the kind of attitude leaders need. A mission
organization wanted to send helpers to Dr. Livingstone and wrote, "Have
you found a good road to where you are? If so, we want to
send other men to join you."
Livingstone replied, "If you have men who will come only if they know
there is a good road, I don't want them. I want men who will
come even if there is no road at all."
2. Accept the Truth: People respond to problems in these
ways: they refuse to accept them; they accept them and then
put up with them; or they accept them and try to make things better.
Leaders must always do the latter.
Broadcaster Paul Harvey said, "In times like these it is good to
remember that there have always been times like these." No
leaser can simultaneously have his head in the sand and navigate his
people through troubled waters. Effective leaders face up to
the reality of a situation.

There is an old
joke about a man who was asked if he could play a violin and answered,
"I don't know. I've never tried." This is psychologically a
very wise reply. Those who have never tried to play a violin

themselves off prematurely from whole areas of life that might have
proved rewarding.

Do YOU Need Vitamin Supplements
Health food vitamins are essential to good health.
A large scale study examined over a million people in the U.S. and compared their mortality rates after segregating them into groups based on their vitamin supplements use. Those participants that had just used a vitamin supplements alone, without Vitamins A, C, or E, had minimal reductions in cancer and heart disease rates. However, those participants who had uses vitamin supplements WITH vitamins A, C, and E had significantly reduced risk of heart disease related deaths.
Fresh fruit and vegetables don't pack the vitamin potential they did even a decade ago. By the time fresh fruit gets to the store, sits on a shelf, is purchased, sits in the refrigerator, is cooked, and finally eaten, only a very small fraction of the nutritional value is left to be absorbed. A clear reason to answer the question, "Do you need vitamin supplements?"
Why are vitamin supplements and mineral supplements important? Our bodies are out of balance, lacking proper vitamins and nutrients and our immune systems are compromised by toxins and pollution, it's no surprise that we eat and eat and never satisfy the essential health food vitamin needs our bodies are craving.

Thinking Positive, Change Your Mind, Change Your Life
“Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.”
- Abraham Lincoln
When tapping in to the power of thinking positive, the most important step is to create a mindset that allows you to think positively. Once you have pulled the weeds from your mental garden, you can begin to sow the seeds that will anchor your new way of life.
Creating a positive mindset takes training. In much the same manner as runners train their bodies to endure long periods of sustained activity, you can train your mind to sustain positive thought, and naturally defer to pleasant or optimistic paths. At first, thinking positively may feel awkward or ridiculous (particularly if you’re the type of person who believes perky morning people should be shot). Keep in mind, though, that it does get easier the more you do it, and eventually, sustaining a thinking positive mindset will be as natural as breathing.
Like any training program, there are steps you can follow to achieve your optimal results: in this case, a thinking positive mental outlook. You may recall that it takes 21 days to form a new habit (what’s that...you’ve forgotten already? Go back and add “long-term memory” to your list of habits you’d like to improve). Therefore, you should perform each step for at least 21 consecutive days. You can take on one step at a time, or implement the several steps.
Step up to your mental treadmill, and let the training begin!
Warm Up: Shake Out Those Negative Kinks
When you think about it, it’s obvious: negative is the opposite of positive, so in order to instill a thinking positive mindset you need to get rid of negative thoughts. Sounds simple enough, right? The process is an easy one, but it takes practice to make it stick.
The first step in clearing negativity from your mind is to really pay attention to your thoughts. Whenever the words can’t, shouldn’t, wouldn’t, won’t, not, or never enter your mind, concentrate on what you’re thinking and turn it around to eliminate the negative wording. For example:
Your spouse and children are gone for a few hours, and you have the place to yourself. You’re indulging in one of your favorite activities. In the midst of your enjoyment, you start to feel guilty. You think: I really shouldn’t be doing this. I could be getting started on the project I promised someone else I’d take care of. Your enjoyment starts to fade, and you stop what you’re doing, resentful that you have to tackle this boring project when you have so little time to yourself...
Does this sound familiar? The moment you hear yourself think shouldn’t, stop right there and change direction. In this scenario, you might instead think I really should be doing this. Taking time for me is important, and when I’m relaxed and satisfied I will be able to do a better job on that project I promised someone else. I’m so glad I got the opportunity to do something I enjoy.
Try to do this every time a negative thought creeps in. The more often you banish negative ideas from your mind, the easier thinking positive will become. You will be more relaxed and receptive to positive solutions.

Being Bigger on the Inside
A man took his younger daughter to a carnival, and she immediately ran over to a booth and asked for cotton candy. As the attendant handed her a huge ball of it, the father asked, “Sweetheart, are you sure you can eat all that?”
“Don’t worry, Dad,” she answered, “I’m a lot bigger on the inside than on the outside.”
That’s what real character is – being bigger on the inside.
To improve your character, do the following:
Ø Search for the cracks. Spend some time looking at the major areas of your life (work, marriage, family, service, etc.), and identify anywhere you might have cut corners, compromised or let people down. Write down every instance you can recall from the past two months.
Ø Look for patterns. Examine the responses that you just wrote down. Is there a particular area where you have a weakness, or do you have a type of problem that keeps surfacing? Detectable patterns will help you diagnose character issues.
Ø Face the music. The beginning of character repair comes when you face your flaws, apologize, and deal with the consequences of your actions. Create a list, follow through will sincere apologies.
Ø Rebuild. It’s one thing to face up to your past actions. It’s another to build a new future. Now that you’ve identified any areas of weakness, create a plan that will prevent you from making the same mistakes again.

Leadership Character - Part 2
"Never 'for the sake of peace and quiet' deny your own experience or
convictions"
Dag Hammarskjold, Statesman and Nobel Peace Prize Winner.
3. Character Brings Lasting Success with People
True leadership always involves other people. (as the leadership
proverb says, if you think you leading and no one is following you,
then you're only taking a walk.) Followers do not trust
leaders whose character they know to be flawed, and they will not
continue following them.
2. Leaders Cannot Rise Above the Limitations of their Character
Have you ever seen highly talented people suddenly fall apart when they
achieved a certain level of success? The key to that phenomenon is character.
Steven Berglas, a psychologist at Harvard Medical School and author of
The Success Syndrome, says that people who achieve great heights but lack
the bedrock character to sustain them through the stress are headed for disaster.
He believes they are destined for one or more of the four A's:
arrogance, painful feelings of aloneness, destructive adventure-seeking, or adultery.
Each is a terrible price to pay for weak character.
This brief quote of material is from "21 Indispensable Qualities of a
Leader" by John Maxwell. This is THE BOOK to have in your

Electronic Muscle Stimulation for Treating Cellulite.
* Increase blood circulation
* Prevent blood clots
* Relax muscle spasms
* And rehabilitate muscle function after a stroke
* Providers of EMS equipment for consumer use will tell you the process will:
* Reduce breast size
* Remove wrinkles
* Do face lifts
* Reduce bellies
* Remove cellulite
There is no clinical evidence that Electronic Muscle Stimulation for treating cellulite can proves such claims, but we will endeavor to briefly explain how this process works according to the
providers.
The premise is that using Electronic Muscle Stimulation, the brain sends a nerve impulse to the “motor point” of the muscle you desire to change. This signal is a message to the muscle to
expand and contract.
With Electronic Muscle Stimulation for treating cellulite, electrodes are
placed on specific motor points of the muscle group(s) to be exercised.
When the electrical stimulation is applied through the electrodes using a mild current the muscle will expand and contract. The theory is that this makes it possible to duplicate regular exercise without the effort using conventional means.

Cellulite and Topical Treatments
The most widely advertised methods we have found are topical creams and/or ointments, body wrapping, electronic muscle stimulation and liposuction. Let’s review them beginning with cellulite and topical treatments.
Cellulite and Topical TreatmentsNumerous products are available to consumers that are promoted in the area of “skin care products” and/or “thigh creams.” Some of the claims are:
* Cellulite and topical treatments increased collagen production
* Cellulite and topical treatments strengthening collagen and elastin fibers
* Cellulite and topical treatments promote cellular stimulation to release stored fat
* Cellulite and topical treatments help weight reduction through appetite suppression.
* Cellulite and topical treatments increased metabolism, and fat burning
* Cellulite and topical treatments reduced water retention.
When is a topical considered a drug or a cosmetic? That’s a difficult question.According to the government drugs, unlike cosmetics, alter the structure or function of the body. Here’s where it gets really confusing.
If the manufacturers claim that thigh creams or other topical treatments eliminate cellulite, is that considered as “altering the structure or function of the body?”

Is Liposuction the Right Cellulite Treatment for You?
Liposuction for the treatment of cellulite may not be for you if you are not accustomed to taking risks. Complications can arise and are unavoidable in a percentage of all patients.Cost is a huge factor to take under consideration.
Since liposuction for the treatment of cellulite is primarily considered “cosmetic,” most medical insurance companies will not pay for the procedure placing the burden directly on you.If you are considering liposuction as a means to lose weight, then liposuction is not for you.
This is a procedure designed to shape the body and is not recommended for losing weight.
If you are on certain medications that affect healing this may not be a procedure you should risk. Some of the considerations are in proceeding with liposuction for the treatment of cellulite are:
Current infection
History of bleeding
Heart disease
Edema
Blood clotting medications
Anti-inflammatory agents
Anti-coagulants
Any medications that may interact with the drugs used during liposuction for the treatment of cellulite.
Your skin elasticity may not be adequate. Your doctor will evaluate the skin at the site where you are considering liposuction for the treatment of cellulite to determine if skin is elastic enough to shrink after liposuction. If it is not, it will be baggy after liposuction for the treatment of cellulite. This may cause you to have to consider plastic surgery to eliminate the excess skin.
The analysis would not be complete without pointing out some of the risks involved.

The Law of Navigation
Followers need leaders who are able to navigate for them. A leader must see not only the destination but must also see the course that needs to be taken to reach the destination. When plotting the course that is to be taken, it is essential that the leader recognizes potential obstacles and makes the necessary preparations.
The most common cause of failure in reaching a goal or destination is the lack of preparation and planning. The leader, as a navigator, must always be mindful that other people depend on them and their ability to chart a good course.
As a navigator, the leader must go through a process before taking others with them. In order to insure the best chance of success the navigating leader will:
1) Draw on Past Experience. The leader will draw on the wisdom of past success and failure. Successes can teach you what you are capable of doing with your gifts and talents while your failures can show you wrong assumptions you’ve made and where your methods may have been flawed in past endeavors.
2) Listen to What Others Have to Say. Past experience cannot teach you everything you need to know to chart a successful course. The leader must draw from all available sources, including other leaders who may have taken similar courses.
3) Examine the Conditions Before Making Commitments. Good leaders count the cost before making commitments for themselves and others. The leader must recognize that the commitments he makes will have a profound impact on others, especially those who are following his leading.
4) Make Sure Their Conclusions Represent Both Faith and Fact. If the leader can’t confidently make the trip in their mind they will not be able to make it in real life. The leader must have faith that the trip can be made. But faith must be balanced with realism. The obstacles and challenges that will be encountered are real and cannot be minimized or rationalized. Faith in the vision must be balanced with the realistic facts.
“Nearly anyone can steer the ship but it takes a leader to chart the course.” John Maxwell

Toxic Chemicals in Your Home
Toxic Chemicals in common household products can be making your family sick. The Environmental Protection Agency defines chemical hazards as "acute" or "chronic:"
1. Acute hazard, includes highly toxic, or corrosive chemicals which cause an adverse effect to an organ after short-term exposure.
2. Chronic hazard, includes carcinogens and other hazardous chemicals which cause an adverse effect over a long-term exposure.
Indoor air is often two to five times more contaminated than outdoor air.- Childhood asthma has nearly doubled in the last 20 years (American Lung Assoc.) and some cleaners may be triggers to asthma attacks.
- The average home contains 25 gallons of hazardous chemicals – a major portion of these can be found in household cleaning products.
- In 1999, 92% of all poisonings occurred in the home.
- Cleaning products are involved in 11% of poisoning exposure in children under 6 years of age.
- 70,000 synthetic chemicals are in production today. Many are suspected to cause cancer or other health effects, but only 600 have been adequately tested.

Exploring Chemical Links to Diseases
Here's the article:
Exploring chemical links to disease:
Thursday, April 13, 2006
Senator Thomas McGee of Lynn, who represents a section of Saugus at the State House, addressed the crowd at a first-of-its-kind forum at the State House yesterday, which featured organizations, speakers, and legislators discussing how chemicals in the environment may be connected with our health.
In the wake of news reports of high asthma rates, the growing problem of diabetes, and ever-increasing cancer rates, dozens of health-related organizations from across the Commonwealth partnered to hold "Making Health Connections", an informational forum on how chemicals in the environment may be linked with diseases and disorders. The Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow, a statewide coalition working to enact policies to replace toxic chemicals with safer alternatives, spearheaded the forum to explore questions about how increasing rates of cancer, asthma, learning disabilities, infertility and other diseases and disorders may be connected with toxic chemicals in the environment.
Organizers called on legislators to pass legislation that will reduce toxic chemicals in products and protect public health. "An Act to Reduce Asthma by Using Safer Alternatives to Cleaning Products", currently pending before the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing, would require that safe cleaning products be used in all public schools, libraries, hospitals and public housing. "An Act for a Healthy Massachusetts: Safer Alternatives to Toxic Chemicals" is currently before the Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture. This bill would require manufacturers to replace toxic chemicals with safer alternatives whenever the alternative is economically feasible.
"A significant body of scientific evidence links exposure to radiation and synthetic chemicals to an increased risk of breast cancer," said Susan Roll, Associate Executive Director of the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition and one of the event's primary organizers. "We hope that legislators and their constituents will begin to think about reducing toxic chemicals as one way of preventing some diseases and disorders."

Direct Selling and Working from Home
Every week about 175,000 people in the US and 350,000 globally sign up to start a direct selling work from home business. Misinformation that direct sales is a scam, only a few every make any money or you'll get stuck with a bunch of products, is all being washed away. (The pyramid schemes of the 70's and 80's hurt a lot of honest people) Direct selling, it’s a word of mouth business, you are already in it, and you just aren’t getting paid for it! When you tell someone about a great movie or restaurant why doesn’t the director or head chef send you a check for your referrals?
Direct selling and working from home has been around for more than 50 years and is the number one home business. It generates almost $30 billion in revenues in the US and is over $100 billion worldwide. Moms work around their families schedules and generate additional income. College students, engineers, teachers, retirees and business people find out that, regardless of your education and background, in many respects, this is a better business than what they’ve been doing.10 Reasons Why Direct Selling and Working From Home is a Great Opportunity:
Direct Selling is a turnkey opportunity complete with manual, instruction and training – all at a fraction of the investment of a standard franchise or a traditional start-up business. Consider these advantages:
1. No employees and no payroll – you set your hours around the needs of your family.
2. No storefront rent or upkeep. No need to worry about rent increases, customer appeal or storefront hours. Your customers can shop 24/7 on line.

Then there are some that seem to barely justify the use of paper they are written on, and I’ve read some of them too.
Every once in a while you find one that is REALLY good. Less Is More Leadership is one of the REALLY good books! If you don’t have a personal leadership library yet, I would suggest that Less Is More Leadership a good place to start. Put this book on your shelf and you won’t have to add very many books to make your library complete.
In this book, Dale Burke shares eight timeless principles on how to lead in our busy and sometimes hectic schedules, and still have a life.
Far too many leaders face early burnout and frustration. Ironically, for many of these leaders, the problem is not that they are leading organizations that are failing and sapping all their strength, but just the opposite.
Success brings its own set of problems and if a leader is not prepared for the added complications that growth, especially rapid growth; the leader will be buried with seemingly no way out.

The Law of Process in Leadership
1. I don’t know what I don’t know.
Most people do not recognize the true value of leadership because they view leadership as only being for those at the top of an organization. If these people would come to the realization that leadership is influence and that, on average, most individuals will try to influence at least four other people in the course of any given day, their view of leadership and its value would change dramatically.
2. I know what I don’t know.
At some point in life we will find ourselves thrust into some position of leadership where we will discover our lack of influence – the lack of leadership. At that point we realize that there is something we must learn. This is when it becomes possible for the leadership growth process to begin. We now know what it is we don’t know.
3. I grow and know and it starts to show.
When you recognize your lack of skill and begin the law of process of personal leadership growth, things start to happen. As we make ourselves life-long learners of leadership and develop our competence, our leadership will continue to grow and we will begin to influence others. As we grow our influence / leadership will also grow. This will not happen overnight, but as we develop our leadership we will experience the Law of Process.
4. I simply go because of what I know.
With experience, what you learn will become a natural process. In the early stages you will have to think about every move you make, but as you incorporate what you’ve learned into daily circumstances it will become second nature. As a result of the leadership process others will begin to recognize your influence and follow your leadership.

About Me
There is a real need for a balanced approach to life these days. As I talk, mentor and communicate with others. there are so many lives extremely out of balance. I see the scales tilting both ways; It doesn't matter if you are male, female, single, single mom or married. From the over zealous to the total lack of regard for a balanced approach to:

Here's a little information about me:
I'm a wife and mother (and recently a grandmother)
I have a background in Office Management and Purchasing and Sales

I understand what motivates people to do something "bigger" than themselves.
I've have in my history the experience of being a single mom
I've also experiencing a lasting marriage (20 + years)
So, this is just a little about me. If you were to ask me what my mission statement is: "I'm just your average person trying to make a difference, a little ripple in my part of the world, one individual or family at a time. "
I have always seen a need for a balanced healthy life and so the start of this website and blog.

Discovering the Leader in You
by Robert J Lee and Sara N King
Examine Your Personal Development in Leadership and Where it Fits With the Rest of Your Life! I have to confess that I haven’t finished this book yet, though I have finished about half of it and skimmed the remaining half, but I will tell you that this is one book that I definitely will not leave half-read. Lee and King are colleagues at the Center for Creative Leadership and have based this book on their years of counseling and training leaders in personal development as well as questionnaires and studies with leaders in varied leadership roles.
Unlike some leadership books that seem to simply regurgitate someone else’s ideas, or others that go into realms of “quantum leadership” that few can truly grasp what the author is trying to convey, Lee and King are down to earth for the fledgling leader, while being relevant to the experienced leader as well.

You Can Stop Smoking
Have you ever heard the phrase, "It's easy to stop smoking, I've done it a hundred times?" We all chuckle when we hear that, but the truth is behind those words is a person suffering from a serious addiction. I sincerely hope this information will help lead you or your loved one on the road to recovery.
Since you are reading this, chances are you are a smoker, or someone you love is a smoker. In either case you surely are not looking for a publication that will tell you how to smoke. Rather, you are looking for a "magic button" to quit smoking.
I am sorry to disappoint you, but there is no "magic button" to stop smoking. In fact, it is going to require discipline on the part of the smoker to kick the addiction.
You will read the word "addiction" over and over again throughout this site The reason is simple. Smoking IS an addiction regardless of how you look at it.
The truth is that deep down where your addiction lives, it is no laughing matter. In fact, it’s downright painful...

Insomnia
Reports have it that 90% of people can acquire transient insomnia at some point in their lives. While an estimate of 30% suffers from its chronic form.
a. Women are said to be more at risk in acquiring insomnia because of the following reasons:
- Pre-menstrual syndrome with symptoms of irritability, depression and anxiety, and bloating due to menstruation disturbs a woman's sleeping pattern. - Menopause can also change a woman's sleeping pattern. - Pregnancy makes sleeplessness one common thing to happen.
b. Elderly people are also prone to getting insomnia because ageing alters sleeping patterns.
c. Depressed people have lighter slumbers compared to those who don't feel this psychological condition.
d. Students or younger ones who are conscious with their grades (because of cramming) can easily become insomniacs too.
With that vast information on what causes insomnia and who are at risk with this sleeping disorder, one can easily ward off this annoying condition.

High cholesterol claims thousands of lives every year...
Will you?
Will your spouse?
High cholesterol claims thousands of lives every year. The really sad thing is that it’s treatable as long as you don’t ignore it.
The chances of you not having this condition are slim to none. Most Americans do have cholesterol. It’s a natural part of our physical makeup. Like everything in nature, it becomes a problem when there is an imbalance.
Sadly, thousands of men and women ignore the warning signs until it’s too late, like our friend Joe.
Do you know the warning signs for high cholesterol? Are you aware of your LDL and HDL levels? Do you even know what they mean?
If you don’t have a clue what we are talking about, you are definitely high risk for this potential killer.
Lowering Your Cholesterol tackles those questions and much more, such as:
§ What is cholesterol?
§ How does it affect my health?
§ How do I know if I’m at risk?
§ Is there a test that will tell me if I have it?
§ How does it affect my lifestyle?
§ Will I need medication?
§ Is it affected by diet?
§ What can I eat?
§ Will it go away with exercise?
§ Should I take supplements?
§ Is it possible to get rid of it?
§ What are some of the treatment options?
§ When is medication necessary?
§ Are natural treatments effective?
All this and much more is at your fingertips. Lowering Your Cholesterol information at my site is written just for you, the person who keeps hearing about cholesterol but doesn’t understand the medical jargon.

How to Reduce Stress at Work and at Home!
The alarm blasts you awake at 5:00 a.m. You swing your legs over the side of the bed, raise your body and it hits. . .headache. Scolding yourself for having that last tempting beer at the BBQ the day before, you drag off to the shower.
As soon as the sharp, penetrating needles of hot water hit your fragile skin, the adrenaline begins to kick in. Thoughts of the Sunday BBQ fade as you begin to mentally check off everything waiting on your desk this Monday morning.
Sitting on the edge of the bed, you pull on the first sock and your toe proceeds to protrude through the end of it. Cursing under your breath, you find another pair only to find it has a whole through the other one! What the heck, you mismatch them. . .no one will every notice, right?
Flying down the stairs, with the agility of a gazelle, you manage to avoid the oatmeal covered fingers of your son as you traverse past his highchair on the way to the coffee pot. As you are pouring your first cup of the day, in waltzes your teenage daughter, looking like something out of the “Bride of Frankenstein” right down to the black finger nail polish.
You cast a sideways glance to your wife and she shrugs her shoulders as if you say, “What can I do?” No time to deal with it now as you rush out the door to join the rest of the stampede of cavemen off to do battle with the dinosaur of the day.
The freeway is in gridlock. . .so what else is new? By the time you reach your hunting grounds instead of feeling like beating your chest and hollering like Tarzan, you just want to crawl into your own den and take a nap.
You secretary is blabbing a litany of “must do’s and don’ts” including a command performance for the boss. The water cooler gang invites you to join the current world debate but you persevere, rushing into your own little office and slamming the door shut behind you. Aaaaah. Peace and quiet.
Suddenly it hits you. You feel as though a ten ton weight has just fallen on your chest. You feel as though you are drowning as you labor to grab a breath. You begin to notice a gnawing pain shooting up and down your left arm. You struggle to reach the intercom and buzz your secretary when everything becomes darker and darker until. .?
Did you know that statistically there are more heart attacks on Monday mornings than at any other time in the United States? It’s true. Traffic, debts, work. They all contribute to STRESS!

Safer Home Products
Home product safe for our homes is a huge priority, the last decade has proven that air within our homes and other buildings, like our schools can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air even in industrialized areas. Research also indicates that people spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors so home product safe environments is so important because for many the health risk is greater from indoor air pollution than outdoors.

People who are exposed to indoor pollutants for the longest periods of time are often the most susceptible, the young, the elderly, and the chronically ill, especially those suffering from respiratory or cardiovascular disease. How to Control Stress
A slow buildup of everyday annoyances: a dead car battery, traffic jam, buttons that pop off your clothes as you are going to an important meeting. It’s the little things that get under your skin Is it a tight schedule and seemingly insurmountable problems?
Bills to pay, a boss to please, a colicky baby to pacify? Juggling many roles is a main cause of stress. Maybe it’s positive and negative life changes, from the joy of a wedding to the loss of a spouse, from the exhilaration of a job promotion to sadness at moving away from old friends.
Perhaps the cause of your stress is inner conflict. Anger with your boss actually may be old anger against a parent bubbling to the surface. If you can recognize a pattern from the past, this can be an instant stress reliever. Take some time, even just 30 seconds and write down your feelings. What you need to do is relax. Huh? It can’t be that simple! Yes, it can and you can do it.
No, we can’t control other people and situations. What you can do is control how you respond to people and events. What you have done is to give away control to others. What you need to do is regain that control, seal it up and only let the twins out when it’s really necessary.
When was the last time you actually relaxed? Can you remember what it was like? Were you calm and collected? Was your breathing normal? Were your muscles loose? And, did you feel that way without any outside stimulants like drugs?
If so, the good news is that you can restore that same feeling at will. Yes, you can definitely take it back whenever or wherever you choose.

Visionary Leadership
Visionary Leadership Addressed in:
Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies
by James C Collins and Jerry I Perras
A key component of personal development is visionary leadership.
For those of you who have read Good to Great you may be at least familiar with this book since it is referred to in that book, and for good reason, this was the predecessor.
As with Good to Great this is can be kind of a difficult read if you are really into novel type literature. Built to Last contains a lot of material and company comparisons that may seem kind of tedious to read at times, but woven into all this information are some truly eye-popping insights into why successful organizations were able to be industry leaders fifty to one hundred or more years after their conception.
What was it that allowed these companies to thrive, even through economic recessions and depressions, while their counterparts, many of whom were much more successful in their infancy, have faded into the background, if they even exist at all today?

The Nature of Leadership
Kevin's Leadership Notes
Last week I started a series based on the two books by John Maxwell, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and its companion book The 21 Most Powerful Minutes in a Leader’s Day. We continue here with the second law that Maxwell addresses, The Law of Influence.Ultimately, people who make things happen are influencers. True leadership can not be awarded, appointed, or assigned to someone. It does not come from position or title. True leadership comes from influence, and must be earned.
The Nature of Leadership
1) Leadership is Influence. If one is unable to influence others, he/she is not a leader. In other words, if the leader has no followers, they are not really leading, they are simply taking a walk. There are some who hold positions of leadership because they have leverage, the ability to hire or fire, or they control paychecks, etc, but are not truly leaders because they have no influence if you remove the leverage....

Who's on Your Bus?

Who's on Your Bus?
Excellent leaders, those that have gone from good to great, paid particular attention to who was on the bus BEFORE they drove off on their project or business adventure. Leaders who ignited transformation from something good to something great did not first figure out where to drive the bus and then get people to take it there. No, the FIRST got the right people on the bus (and the wrong people off the bus) and then figured out where to drive it. They said in essence, "look, I don't really know where we should take this bus. But I know this much: If we get the right people on the bus, the right people in the right seats, and the wrong people off the bus, then we'll figure out how to take it someplace great."
Great leads understood three simple truths. First, if you begin with "who", rather than "what," you can more easily adapt to a changing world. If people join the bus primarily because of where it's going, what happens if you get ten miles down the road and you need to change direction? You've got a problem. But if people are on the bus because of who else is one the bus, then it's much easier to change direction: " Hey, I got on this but because of who else is on it; if we need to change direction to be more successful, fine with me: Second, if you have the right people on the bus, the problem of how to motivate and manage people goes away. The right people don't need to be tightly managed or fired up, they will be self-motivated by the inner drive to product the best results and to be part of creating something great. Third, if you have the wrong people, it doesn't matter whether you discover the right direction; you still won’t have a great project or business venture. Great vision without great people is irrelevant.

The Law of the Lid in Leadership
| The Law of the Lid in Leadership There are some books that deserve to be read a second time, or more and are key to leadership growth. I’m finding that to be the case with the book I’m currently reading. I originally read John Maxwell’s The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership about three years ago, but I’m finding that it has a little different flavor to it now than it did then. With a couple of years behind me I find that I see these foundations of leadership from a little different perspective. Addressing the law of the lid leadership growth, there are some areas I’ve had leadership growth in, and I can see some areas that still need some work. Leadership, like life, is a growing process. |
When we stop growing we
start dying. I’m being challenged once again in
these areas and would like to pass along some of this information to you.
The thoughts I will be sharing
actually come from two of John Maxwell’s books; The 21
Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and the companion book, The 21 Most
Powerful Minutes in a Leader’s Day. These are excellent books for Leadership Growth.
Maxwell shares is: The Law of the Lid in Leadership.
Leadership ability is the
lid, or limiting factor, that determines a person’s level of
effectiveness. The world is full of talented people who never
reach their full potential because their leadership growth ability
limits what they are able to accomplish; hence the law of the lid in leadership. In the world of
sports you can find many teams that are full of talented players but as
a team they just never seem to pull it together to win the
championship. Leadership is often the determining factor
between the champions and the also-rans.

Self Leadership
Who leads the leader? Possibly one of the greatest challenges in leadership growth is to hone traits or abilities to possess the art of “self leadership”. Difficulties and obstacles will come to every organization, that is a given, regardless of who is leading or how good a leader they are. The difference is in how leaders view these circumstances and how they exhibit leadership growth through the challenges.
In good self leadership, instead of getting discouraged and succumbing to self-pity, leaders will see difficult circumstances as an opportunity to become better. In these times the good leader will exhibit self leadership.
Self leadership asks the question “What if…?” rather than complaining “If only….” Self leadership takes full responsibility for making something happen, in spite of the seeming limitations that surround the leader. A leader who operates in the self leadership mode will look at the problem with the following perspectives:
1) I am free as a leader to get out of the box. If a particular approach to a problem isn’t working, change it. It has been said that the definition of insanity is “Doing the same thing over and over expecting the results to change”. Don’t be afraid to experiment. An experiment that fails is not life or death, it is an experiment. And if you succeed you just might build a better light bulb.

Thinking for a Change...
Okay, I know that there is a book out there on leadership growth by that title, but I haven’t read it, so I hope that if any of you have, this will at least fall in line with the principles it shares.
When I read those four simple words I get two pictures in my mind. The first is this, “Thinking, for a change.” It amazes me sometimes, especially with my children, that after they have tried to do something that defies the laws of gravity, or that just doesn’t seem logical at all, you can ask them, “What were you thinking?” and their response goes along the lines of “I wasn’t.” How many blunders in our leadership growth do we make simply because we haven’t given any thought to what we are doing. So, if you find yourself in some of those places more often than you should, try thinking, for a change!
The second picture is that of “Thinking for a change.” Following is a brief over view of the thinking process and how it affects our lives and leadership growth:
• Our thinking determines what we believe. What we believe about ourselves and our surroundings is determined by what and how we think about it.
• Our beliefs determine our expectations. The beliefs we hold affect the way we view our surroundings and what we expect from others and our circumstances.

Leadership in Influence
Kevin's Leadership Notes
Leadership Is Influence There are tons of books out there telling us how to have leadership growth and lead. Some are worth their weight in gold, others don’t seem to be worth the paper they were written on. I have found personally that those of greatest value concentrate on leadership growth principles and foundations that have been unchanged by time, economy and social or business climate. Those that seem to have less significance tend to address current trends or fads in leadership. But with all the information and learning resources available to improve our leadership growth, it is perhaps best to define leadership before we go and try to improve it.
John Maxwell’s definition of leadership is one of the simplest, yet deepest, definitions I’ve encountered. Maxwell defines leadership like this: “Leadership is Influence”.
It doesn’t seem that you could find a more simple definition, yet in its simplicity there is depth that takes a lifetime to discover. It has been said that the average introvert will have an influence on 10,000 people in their lifetime. Kind of gives a whole new meaning to being a leader doesn’t it.

A Leader Knows His Season
You already know that each of these stages in life require different skills, but each of these stages in the life of a business also requires different skills. Different levels of involvement and leadership are required for the new born business than the teenage business, and if you have been building a business long enough that your business has teenagers you had better be working hard at increasing your leadership skills, you need to excell in leadership growth especially if you happen to have one of those that already “knows all the answers”.
The point of all this is that we can never stop growing or become complacent because when that happens we will find ourselves in stages that we would really rather avoid, stagnation and or death. In life, we may not be able to avoid the nursing home, and death will catch up with us sooner or later, but in business we can “jump the curve”. Our businesses do not have to face decline. Oh, we will have those times when we stumble and have to pick ourselves back up (these are growth opportunities, as long as you keep picking yourself back up), but we can and must continue to grow.
Thanks for checking in....I may have the solution for you.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a smile is worth a million. The power of a smile is incredible. Even if you don’t feel like smiling, the simple act of lifting the corners of your mouth can help you lift your entire spirit and find something worth smiling about. Some of the greatest self-help advice out there comes from those who advocate “fake it until you make it.” This is especially true when it comes to thinking positive, and faking a smile goes a long way toward producing the genuine thing. You may end up laughing at yourself merely because you know you have nothing to smile about.
Another great thing about smiles- they’re highly contagious. A smile spreads faster than a cold in a daycare. Most people can’t help smiling back when someone casts a happy expression their way. This is a simple and exciting theory that you can test out for yourself. Go to any public place and start smiling at random people, then keep track of how many smile back (even suspicious smirking counts!). You’ll likely find that 9 out of 10 of your targets return your joyful expression to some small degree, and you’ve probably just made their day a little brighter, too.
A Good Leader Knows their Strengths and Weaknesses
A mentor of mine has a wonderful way of making leadership growth manageable and bite size. It can be a challenge to always be moving forward. I hopeyou will be encouraged to make minor changes in your personal growth to
impact and influence those around you positively.
Kevin's Leadership Notes
A good leader knows in order to have leadership growth, they need to know
their strengths and weaknesses so they can fill those areas with the
strengths of others. Part of knowing those strengths and weaknesses is
to recognize a leader’s primary leadership aptitude and the
strengths and weaknesses associated with that aptitude. The four
leadership aptitudes are: the Directing Leader; the Strategic Leader;
the Team-Building Leader; and the Operational Leader. Since we have
already taken a look at the first aptitude, that of the Directing
Leader, we will next look into those characteristics of the Strategic
Leader. Leadership growth comes from understanding how you fit into
these categories,or what blend you may be; also knowing the kind of
leaders you work with can help you to mobile others and have a positive
influence on a project or goal.
The Strategic Leader
Generally speaking the strategic leader is the person who tends to be
over prepared in just about any circumstance. Strategic leaders tend to
be vision developers and shapers, rather than the conceiver, like the
directing leaders. The strategic leader will look at the vision and
begin gathering the information and data needed to begin laying out a
plan of action for reaching the vision. They are not afraid to ask the
hard questions and they don’t mind creating controversy
because their primary motive is to understand reality so they may
develop a workable plan. Don’t expect the strategic leader to
generate excitement about the vision. They are more likely to skip
public rallies than to lead them. One of their greatest strengths is
the ability to stay emotionally detached from the processes of
converting vision into reality, allowing them to draw objective
conclusions. This may also be one of their greatest weaknesses.
Because their focus is on facts, figures, plans and possibilities
others tend to portray them as insensitive and unemotional, even
robotic. They are rarely the most popular person on the team, which
doesn’t really matter to them since they are generally
happier working with ideas than with people.
A common complaint about strategic leaders is that they take so long to
make decisions. These are people that figure if they can just gather
enough information they can eliminate the risks involved in decision
making. Of course the risk can only be reduced, never eliminated. When
strategic leaders speak publicly they tend to be precise, complete, and
focused—and long- winded and boring.
The strategic leader is a conceptual thinker and is vital to the team
in helping it reach its goals. Their ability to develop a strategy to
reach the vision is something that can help move an organization from
simply being good to attaining great. Leadership growth is recognizing
this person on your team (it may be you) and utilizing them in their
greatest capacity. If you work under this kind of leader than you need
to understand what their asking from you.
The four leadership aptitudes and many of the thoughts included here
have their basis in the book A Fish Out of Water by George Barna.
